Military-incited violence in Cairo left 27 dead and around 300 injured.

CAIRO:  Prominent Coptic businessman turned politician, Naguib Sawiris, accused the Egyptian military of being complicit in the massacre at Maspero on October 9.

Sawiris rejected that the violence at Maspero was incited by “infiltrators” and stated that it is the responsibility of the military to safeguard security, in an interview on Al Arabiya TV’s “Point of Order”.

Despite numerous accusations that the military was responsible for inciting the violence at Maspero that left 27 dead and nearly 300 injured the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) has remained adamant that it was not involved in the killing or injury of the Coptic protesters.

“The armed forces were targeted just like the Copts. The forces were unarmed,” stated SCAF General Mohamed El-Attar in a television interview with two prominent Egyptian correspondents on October 19.

“It was done by a foreign sect, and we are after them. We will get them. The security forces are working night and day to find those responsible,” asserted El-Attar.

However, eyewitness reports and Bikyamasr.com staff at the scene confirmed that it was military personnel that opened fire on the peaceful protesters.

Video footage found online show military vehicles running over citizens.

Sawiris is the founder of the newly formed Free Egyptians Party set to run in the forthcoming parliamentary elections.  He is also the founder of Egypt’s telecom giant Mobinil.
