Egypt football clubs to be fined over fan’s firecrackers, say police

Egypt football fans often clash with police.

CAIRO: The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has said it would issue a 20,000 Egyptian pounds ($3,750) fine on the sports club if a fan lights up a firecracker inside a stadium.

The decision was based on a request from the ministry of interior, the Egyptian police website reported.

The meeting that discussed the penalty was attended by the new Minister of Interior General Mohamed Ibrahim and the minister of information along with the chairman of the EFA.

The decision also fines the club a game without its fans in the stands if the firecracker lands on the field.

The statement also pleaded with fans of the number one sport in the country, football, to curb their cheers and abide to the rules and the regulations of the game, calling on them to have a “sportive spirit.”

The Ultras, or the die hard fans of a football club, took part in the Egyptian revolution earlier this year and maintain a strong presence at protests and sit-ins, in support of fellow activists.

There has been recorded clashes between the police and the Ultras, but the fans bite back. The same fire crackers fined in the decision were used against police in recent clashes around Cairo’s Tahrir Square and helped divert the police attacks on protesters.

The Ultras are known for being festive-like and loud and are now intricately involved in politics.
