Man raped in UAE by 13 relatives of woman he had relationship with

DUBAI: Thirteen men were imprisoned for between one and two years this week for kidnapping and raping an Asian man who allegedly had a relationship with one of their female relatives, The National newspaper reported on Tuesday.
According to the report, the men kidnapped, sexually assaulted the man and filmed the entire attack on their mobile phone.
Police said they rescued the man from the house, but did not say how long the man had been there or how long the ordeal had taken.
The sentence, however, has rights groups angered over the apparent lack of longer jail time, saying that kidnapping and rape should carry harsher sentences.
One human rights advocate in Dubai told Bikyamasr.com that the country needs to reexamine its penalties for rape and sexual crimes.
“There are many difficulties facing victims here and one of those is the short jail times their attackers receive. Often, if the culprits are Emiratis the sentencing is much shorter and this is unacceptable,” said the worker, asking for anonymity.
For example, the penalty for adultery, or any sexual relationship outside marriage, carries much stiffer jail terms than the men were given. Last year, a woman was sentenced to at least five years in jail for having an affair with a man in the country.
