Egypt: Injured reporter’s colleagues start sit-in at Maspero
CAIRO: Egypt workers of the Union of the Egyptian Broadcasting and Television Authority, or Maspero, announced on Thursday an open-ended sit-in in front of the office of the Minister of Information Ahmed Anis, and decided not to break the sit-in until the Minister issues a decree for their colleague, reporter Mahmoud Azali, to travel to Germany for treatment at the expense of the government, after he was shot with birdshot in his eye while reporting the clashes between the police and protesters in the vicinity of the Ministry of Interior last week.
The minister has rejected the demands of the workers and said that the condition of Azali, the reporter for the state-owned News Channel Nile News, “is not worth traveling for treatment abroad,” despite several reports written by his doctors to the minister stating that the reporter`s condition is “severe” and he is “at risk of losing his sight.”
The workers told local newspapers that the minister told them literally “hit your head against the walls,” when they protested his rejection.
Azali was injured in the eye when he was covering the clashes on Mansour Street and Mohammed Mahmoud Street in front of the Ministry of Interior. The clashes led to the death of 15 people.
