Egyptians sad Soviet Union collapsed, capitalist system optimism dropping
Nov 16th, 2009 | By Bikya Masr Staff | Category: NewsCAIRO: A global poll conducted by GlobeScan revealed that 75 percent of Egyptians and 30 percent of Indians in the survey expressed a negative view about the disintegration of the Soviet Union, revealing their dissatisfaction with the demise of the USSR. It shows that despite the overall global belief that the end of the Soviet Union was a positive global point, Egyptians still want the old USSR.
RIA Novosti, which published the complete polling data said that the Egyptian people feel “more disappointed by the capitalist system and they want a greater role for the state in the economy,” while some 20 percent of Britons and Canadians said the capitalist system has failed.
The poll revealed that 51 percent of the respondents see the need to reform the capitalist system and control it, while 23 percent see the need to remove the system altogether. Only 11 percent were satisfied with the capitalist system worldwide.
The poll showed that 77 percent of Russians want the state to grow in its role of controlling the main sectors of the economy and called for taking steps towards the nationalization of important sectors.
The supervisors of the poll noted that “that the number of supporters of a free market economy decreased by 10 percent since 2002.”
France, Mexico and Brazil are the top three opponents of the capitalist system, with 43 percent, 38 percent and 35 percent, respectively, calling for its end.
The majority of the respondents in only two countries – the United States and Pakistan – expressed satisfaction with the system. The same poll showed that 22 percent of people around the world saw the demise of the Soviet Union as a bad historical moment, while 54 percent said they considered the end of the Soviet Union as a good thing for history.
