Egypt family tortured, beaten: blogger

Dec 13th, 2009 | By Mohamed Abdel Salam | Category: Egypt, Featured, News

torture_egypt_ikhwanwebCAIRO: The “From Mahalla to Cairo” blog reported that an entire family was subjected to beating, torture and the fabrication of random charges by a police officer in Alexandria. According to Mohamed Marei’s popular and respected blog, Mohamed Ragab, the chief of detectives at the Muharram Bey police station in Alexandria “a whole family’s lives are threatened with displacement and danger, as a father in his 70s and a mother, 60, a girl in her 40s were beaten in the streets by more than 15 secret detectives and three other police officers, headed by Ragab.”

They were then taken to Muharrem Bey police station and “then random charges were fabricated against the family and the daughter, where the officer accused them of resisting the authorities – it is noteworthy to mention that the father is very old and the mother is ill – and they were accused of resisting an armed police force with pistols and machine guns.”

The incident in question began when the chief of detectives received a communication of a fight between Ibrahim Mohammed and a group of owners of satellite and cable networks in their area. The Chief then went to the scene with two officers and 15 plainclothes officers to arrest Mohammed. Following this, they went to “his house without having a warrant from the prosecution and without any legal basis, but they didn’t find him and then broke into his father’s room, who is in his seventies and slapped him on his face, dragging him on the ground.

“All this only to press the father to inform him of the whereabouts of Mohammed, the mother who is in her 60s was screaming for help, but she got beaten and her veil was taken off and [she was] hit in front of passersby and neighbors, causing her serious injury and [police] dragged both the mother and the father to the police car to take them to the police station.” According to Marei, the parents were then surprised with the presence of their three daughters, Sahar, Seham and Hend, in the police station, and “they were held in the custody of the police. It appeared clearly that they were subjected to torture.”

Egyptian and international rights groups have repeatedly said Egyptian police resort to the “systematic torture” of citizens at police stations and in the street in order to get information.

Sahar and Hend were arrested when they went to the police station to file a report against the owners of the satellite and cable networks who had been at odds with their brother. Marei reported that Ragab ordered the girls to be held in police custody until the brother turned himself in.

The other daughter, Seham learned from a phone call from an officer at the station that her two sisters were being held and was warned not to go so that they wouldn’t arrest her too, “but she went there and got arrested, while receiving a barrage of dirty insults and beaten continuously to provide information on the place of her brother.”

Then a record was filed against the parents and their daughter Seham, the report continued.

Police have charged with “resisting the authorities and detention of the officers and informers inside their house, claiming they used gas pipes, according to the claims of the detectives, then based on this record, the parents along with their daughters were referred to the prosecution, where their lawyer Abdel Ma’boud Abdel Kader Toulba, were surprised by the Prosecutor asking him to leave the room, not to be present during the course of the investigation despite the presence of the chief of detectives, who is supposed to be the opponent who was not asked to leave the room.”

Abel Ma’boud said in a telephone call with the blogger that “we [Egypt] became a lawless state. How can’t we, as lawyers, be allowed to be present with our clients during the course of investigations and allow the one we accuse of torture to be present?”

He added that they asked the prosecutor after the investigations to refer the parents and the daughters to the medical examiner in order to prove the incidence of injuries and torture and to move to the house to investigate. They then asked “to go to the police station to inspect it because there are two other detainees without any explanation and that the lawyer asked to have an access to the record, and then went out from the investigation room.”

According to reports from Alexandria, the prosecutor refused the lawyer access to the documents and his entire request for an investigation into the matter.

A few hours later, police released the two daughters, after having detained them for two full days, from December 3 to 5, “without any legal basis, where they were in a very bad state after being tortured, beaten and insulted.”

The blog said that the life of the family is threatened with the loss and displacement of their personal belongings, home and “after the referral of the entire case to the criminal court, it has become difficult to release them, despite being the victim of a police officer, who is supposed to maintain their security and safety, but he used his authority to fabricate charges against them.”

It should be noted that the mother suffers from diabetes and despite this, however, “the administration of the police station prevented her from receiving any medicine.”

I can’t believe this! Please tell me this is not true!!!

  3. it appears to be true. we trust Mohamed Marei with giving the facts

  5. It is true and quite normal in Egypt.
This is a routine police investigation in Egypt. Egypt has many Guantanamos and Abu Graiibs, they call them police stations. Egyptian policemen are known for their brutality and ignorance of fundamental human rights. If this shock you, then wait until you hear of what is done to political activists.

  6. *
Is this any different than one would find in the Islamic Republic of Iran? Or the Islamic Kingdom of Saudi Arabia? Or ‘secular’ Islamic Turkey? Or Islamic Yemen? Or Islamic Pakistan? Or Islamic Bangladesh? Or Islamic Palestine? Or Islamic Afghanistan? Or ….well…you get the picture.

Exceptional abuse of power can occur in any society, if people revert to their primal animal instincts and revenge. But widespread, systemic abuse of power is the norm when an entire culture is based on primal animal instincts and revenge.

Islam is a violent, misogynistic, primal, revenge based ideology – submit to the religion or submit to violence – thus it is not surprising to expect human rights abuses within the culture and within cultural institutions of the Islamic world.

When your ‘holy’ phophet was violent, your ‘holy’ book is violent, your Sharia law is violent, and the mandate of the ‘religion’ is violent, you should expect violence.

  7. “If this shock you, then wait until you hear of what is done to political activists.” Not a shock. I just wanted to know is this true.
I’ve read far too many sad stories what happens in this country. It’s so difficult to understand WHY.
How people can be so rude to other people…
I know how ordinary, poor people need to have connections to solve their problems. Otherwise there’s no hope.
There should always be hope in our lives…right?

  8. Infidel Alliance,
Do you really have nothing better to do with your time than constantly brewing hate behind a cowardly pseudonym?

    Love,
    Jamal

  9. Dear “Jamal” (if that’s your real name),

What I am actually doing is brewing a strong cup of the TRUTH.

I have never called for hate nor violence by anyone against anyone. And I will stand here and categorically reject hate and violence and encourage love and peace. The only hate, violence, misogyny and intolerance that you see in my comments comes directly from Islamic sources, not me, which is the hard truth I am trying to point out.

In my experience, I have found that as many Muslims are as ignorant about the reality of Islam’s teachings, Islam’s ‘holy’ prophet Muhammed and Islam’s history as the infidel mushrikun are. This is because Islam denies Muslims freedom of thought and freedom of conscience, because it requires that they not question but simply SUBMIT. They don’t understand the corrosive effect on humanity that submission creates. Thus, I ask hard questions and raise hard issues to force Muslims and infidels alike to think critically, objectively and rationally to find the truth.

Islam by its very nature is a totalitarian ideology, and Muslims are in truth the biggest victims of Islam. Until Muslims are free to question Islam, Muhammed and the Koran, they are simply prisoners. Until Muslims are truly free to change their religion, or reject Islam entirely without fear of a Koranic death sentence, Islam will remain a theological gulag of terror.

FACTS. TRUTH. FREEDOM. LOVE. For all people. That’s what The Infidel Alliance is all about.

    Best regards,

    ~ The Infidel Alliance

  10. dear infidel alliance,

i recommend you read up on christianity and the “holy” wars they have raged…with other countries and with their own “people”.

“Islam by its very nature is a totalitarian ideology, and Muslims are in truth the biggest victims of Islam. Until Muslims are free to question Islam, Muhammed and the Koran, they are simply prisoners. ” —-is this not true of Catholicism? or Baptist? Or Seventh Day Adventist? RELIGION when used as a POLITICAL tool and NOT what it was INTENDED for (as a SPIRITUAL guide) will always find the same end result. Who are you to decide that what is right and what is wrong? a bit presumptuous don’t you think?

Truth is subjective. Depending on what perspective you have each human has their very own truth.

FACTS. TRUTH. FREEDOM. LOVE. for all people would be to understand and ALLOW others the CHOICE of life WITHOUT JUDGEMENT but with COMPASSION, TOLERANCE AND UNDERSTANDING. and most importantly, if you really do want to preach love…then why even WRITE hateful vengeful words?

be a beacon on a hill…a light for mankind.

  12. Hi “human being”, you’re human alright! See, our infidel is only a mask, a cover up so to say. Coz if he’d fight hate he’d go at Yankeestan a.k.a. USA and the christian infidels and the jewish infidels. All he does since appearance is spew hate like a little volcano against Islam. He appeared like Holy Mary in Egypt, hehehe. But hey! he means only well!!!!!

    U’re OK.

  13. Dear “a human being” and “Avigdor”,

The only ‘hateful’ words I am ‘spewing’ are quotes from the Koran and Ahadith. I have written some blunt, hard hitting commentary, but I challenge you to show me where I have written anything ‘hateful’.

And no, it is not true “of Catholicism? or Baptist? Or Seventh Day Adventist?”

Sure, there have always been abuses in the man made institutions of churches. There always will be. But unlike Islam, there is no death fatwa in any of these faiths for questioning or leaving the faith and joining any other religion, or even becoming an athiest.

    Here are some undeniable FACTS:

When a Christian rapes, murders, robs or enslaves, he is doing so in direct contravention to the teachings and life examples of Jesus (the ‘Christ’ and founder of Christianity).

When a Buddhist rapes, murders, robs or enslaves, he is doing so in direct contravention to the teachings and life examples of the Guatama Buddha (the founder of Buddhism).

When a Muslim rapes, murders, robs or enslaves, he is doing so in direct ACCORDANCE with the teachings and life examples of Muhammed (the ‘holy prophet’ and founder of Islam).

Muhammed was a violent, intolerant, oppressive, murdering, butchering, raping, enslaving, robbing terrorist. Yet Muhamed set the moral standard for Islam and all Muslims to follow.

‘a human being’, what is truly ‘hateful’ or ‘vengeful’? My commentaries or the teachings and life examples of Muhammed?

    Best regards,

  14. ” I just wanted to know is this true.” by BLOGitse,

They used to describe Cairo as Paris on the Nile, inhabited by nice, gentle and friendly helpful people living in harmony. Then came the revolution and the corruption. Actually Egypt is not a free country it is occupied by bunch of military officers, their families and friends. They perfected the imperialistic technique of Divide and rule to help in controlling the country. The crule and brutal ruralrs put wedges between Muslims and Copts, North and South, Urban people and Rural people, Males (men) against Women , ignorants against intellectuals…etc. Egyptian people became poorer, desperate, except for twenty or so filthy rich families. I mean really rich that they can get away with ANY thing.
The rest is what you read here from Eleonora, Infidel Alliance, Abu Herreira and others.
It is a case of reverse evolution or regression.

  15. Hey Infidel!
Face it that u r a mono-thematic troll, a poor fellow of human race who simply hates Islam and Muslims. That’s ok with me as it’s u’re problem.
But have the guts to face it, admit it and stop the bulls**t decoration!

    Your mantra: Islam is evil.
Your credo: coz of 1 guy all Muslim are rapists, murderers, etc. like in Nazi Germany the Jews.
Your final line: all the evil of the world comes from Islam
Incitement in its purest form and non-stop.
Surprise to me that this is allowed.

You speak for oppressed people or something like that?
Friend why then don’t u speak for our women who are harassed by the Modesty Patrol in Jerusalem and beaten up coz of them wearing half-sleeves?
The women folks having to sit in the back of the bus?
The women folks having to shave their hair after marriage and wear the “sheitl”?
    Or the pot hat?
Our bearded guys who go on rampage and destroy video shops coz they are “evil”?
Ur Rabbis (I distance myself) calling for the killing of all gentiles?
All in the name of the religion?
The settlers driving in fancy Mercedes over wounded Palis back and forth and police stand by and do nothing? The world press not even allowed to report it only Israeli press and Jazeera did.
But this is too close to ur home right? I can smell a zionist a mile away.
They all have the same rotten odor.

Or would u like to start with Christians?

What counts is only todays action. Jews, Christians, Muslims. All.
    Nohing else!

    Ur action is evil. Shalom
    Avi

  17. Dear Avigdor,
There are many people whom you can no longer fool. The horrendous, endemic cruelty of Islam is not an aberration, but normative Islam. You have no choice but to follow the cruel example of Mohammed as long as you remain in this mind-control and information-control death cult.

“We love death,” is what Mohammed’s first followers said. Look it up. If you can read that and not shudder with revulsion, you are a zombie cultist.
