CAIRO: At least one woman has died and some 9 people have been injured in Egypt’s Sinai Peninusla, which has been hit by the worst flooding in 16 years, according to Egyptian officials. Flooding is uncommon in the Sinai Peninsula, a rocky and hot desert, but the resulting water has left a number of areas near Ras Sidr, dangerous and government agencies have called on citizens to avoid the area if possible.

The ministry of health confirmed that at least one woman has died as a result and warns that it may be difficult for health workers to reach the area to assist others if the flooding worsens.

The most severe flooding occurred Sunday evening on the west coast of the peninsula, an Egyptian official said. Emergency services had to use rubber boats to help people trapped in their homes.

Egypt used to experience annual floods along the Nile until the completion of a dam in Upper Egypt ended the millenia flooding, but floods do occur and the Egyptian government says it is being vigilant in emergency preparations in the event flooding occurs in large populated areas.
