Israel: Sheikh Jarrah settlers continue legal proceedings to evict al- Kurd family

Mar 11th, 2010 | By Bikya Masr Staff | Category: News, Palestine

Legal proceedings will continue in the Russian Compound at the Peace Court. Settlers will pursue legal means to gain access to the back partition of the Al-Kurd home, the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) reported on Thursday morning.

Israeli and international activists will gather outside the court house to demonstrate against the evictions.

22 families are facing eviction in Sheikh Jarrah. The settlers are using allegedly-forged Ottoman era land claim to foment the evictions.

The front partition of the Al-Kurd home was taken by settlers on December first. The settlers have struggled to evict the family from the back partition of their home.

“This is blatant ethnic cleansing. Where will these people go? These evictions are illegal and need to be stopped before justice can pervade Jerusalem,” said Jaime Hilt, an ISM activist.

For weeks now, ISM and other international rights groups have spoken out over the settlers’ claims and activities. This current round of litigation comes as American Vice-President Joe Biden is in Israel to meet with Israeli officials.

This week Israel approved more settlement construction in areas not internationally recognized as being inside Israel’s borders, much to the anger and frustration of activists and Palestinians.

  1. The issue is to whom does the building belong.
The fact that they have nowhere to go is not a reason to keep them in the building if it is not theirs.
The Israeli supreme court has often sided with Arabs or leftists and is far from a right wing court.
I think that the right way to fight this is in court and through appeals. Dont make it a story of genocide – no one is killing anyone – they are using the courts to try to gain property back that they believe is theirs.

  2. Is there an existing treaty that recognizes the old land grants? Even the USA honored the land grants made from California and Spain.

  3. Read what Gush Shalom has to say about Sheikh Jarrah:

“Thou Shalt Not Steal! Thou Shalt not Kill! Get Out Of Sheikh Jarrah!” (http://zope.gush-shalom.org/home/en/events/1267743453)

On their homepage you find more interesting articles about Sheikh Jarrah and the situation in general.

To James: The Israeli supreme court presumably does not “side” with anyone but with the law! That it’s rulings are more often than not NOT implemented when it is in favor of Israeli Arabs is a different story and perfectly befitting a democratic state …
